Acer AspireREvo Based on NVIDIA’s ION Platform Just Launched

Acer AspireREvo Based on NVIDIA's ION Platform Just Launched

Acer just announced the first computer based on NVIDIA’s ION platform. Acer named it AspireRevo. It looks like a Nettop, except that it contains an entry-level NVIDIA GPU that is many times faster (10X, it’s the same GPU found in the recent macbooks) than previous integrated solutions provided by Intel. However, Intel is still in the box, thanks to the presence of an Atom processor. We like the 4GB memory limit very much.

Just as NVIDIA planned, the box can run 1080p videos, output 7.1 surround sound audio and is compatible with DX 10 graphics, although don’t expect gaming performance. NVIDIA is now using “NVIDIA ION” is the official product line name in this segment.

We have not seen any Atom-based solutions that were good at recording TV (yet), regardless of which GPU they are using. It is something that’s needed to create a Home Theater PC based off this. This wil lship with Vista Home Premium at launch, followed by Windows 7. NVIDIA says that it has 40 ION design-wins in many from factors. Pricing has not been released, but we expect this to cost between $350 and $450

Spam levels return to levels seen before McColo shutdown

Posted: 07 Apr 2009 02:24 PM PDT

spamSpam levels have returned to the level they were at before the shutdown of nefarious ISP McColo, which was known for its acceptance of spammers and scammers as customers.  After the shutdown, spam levels dropped an amazing 75%, largely in part because three botnets were cut off by it: Mega-D, Srizbi, and Rustock. Mega-D.  At least one, Mega-D (named after one of the fake pharmaceuticals its spam hyped), has resumed operations.  Experts say it has most likely relocated to an overseas host, probably in Romania or Estonia.

The current hot topics being used by the spammers now include the economy, financial markets, and unemployment.  In January, spammers made use of the presidential inauguration and the holidays of Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day.  Those holidays were also widely used to spread malware in the form of fake e-greetings.

The newest type of spam being sent is location based.  It starts with a spam message directing the user to a webpage with a fake news story announcing a national disaster or crisis has hit their city or one nearby.  The scammers customize the story to the user's location by capturing the IP and determining its geolocation, hoping the personalization will help convince them to click on the link, which then loads malware onto their computer.

If you aren’t doing so already, install a good anti-virus program and keep it updated.  These days such software is crucial for the safety and security of your system!

Lenovo, more typically associated with computers, will be releasing this media player to the public soon, though we don’t know the exact date as of yet. However, we do know several of this upcoming device’s specs. For instance, it has a 4.3-inch 480×272 rez touchscreen, an FM tuner and a microSD card slot.

It can also play several file formats. It has codec compatibility for AVI, ASF, MP3, MP4, RMVB, FLAC, WAV, APE, OGG and WMA. Pricing is still a mystery as well, but if you’re in the market for a PMP that’s not an iPod, then you might want to wait for this one.

WiiSpray gets real; looks impressive

Posted: 07 Apr 2009 01:27 PM PDT

We first heard about WiiSpray superb functionality. Is it practical? Not really. But that doesn’t stop it from being awesome and something that we’d love to have.

wiispray 20090407 400

Created by Martin Lihs, and first detailed in his thesis at Bauhaus University, WiiSpray is  surprisingly functional device that allows you to graffiti, without leaving a mark anywhere. However, it has the great advantage of still providing the look and feel of a real spray paint can.

The system is controlled by a Wiimote that’s been given the spray can treatment. You can select different colors, use stencils and spray paint just like you would with a real spray can. The whole thing was sponsored by Montana Cans, so it makes sense they would ensure there would be an accurate spray pattern. We don’t know if this will ever reach the public, but it’s pretty cool anyway. Check out the WiiSpray trailer below:

T-Mobile 3G network set to expand, says rumor

Posted: 07 Apr 2009 12:32 PM PDT

According to a screenshot captured by the people at , T-Mobile will be expanding their 3G network coverage this year to include other cities within the U.S. Though this is just a rumor at this time, the visual evidence does seem pretty solid.

The leaked screenshot shows that T-Mobile customers in new cities will have access to their 3G network as early as tomorrow. For instance, those in Wichita Falls, Texas will have access starting this month, as will people in Shreveport and Lubbock.

Many more cities are added to the coverage list in May and June, including Springfield, Illinois. However, cities like Pittsburgh, Honolulu and others are to be added before the year is out. This seems to indicate T-Mobile is keeping good to their promise that they would be rolling out 3G coverage faster this year.

Mouse Mouse Is Creepy

Mouse Mouse Is Creepy

We’d suggest you give this article a miss if you do not happen to possess the necessary intestinal fortitude - after all, we’re talking about a computer mouse that brings the truth much closer to home than what we’re used to. The Mouse Mouse, as it is called for obvious reasons, comprises of a preserved mouse skin that wraps the innards of a computer mouse, complete with a slit cut out at the top of the mouse’s back in order for the scroll wheel to function as it should. Creepy! We wonder what would happen after months of using this mouse - will all our sweat be soaked up by the dead rodent?
