T-Mobile’s got a not-so-secret event planned for April 21

Posted: 09 Apr 2009 04:17 PM PDT

T-Mobile's got a not-so-secret event planned for April 21Calling all T-Mobile G1 Fanboys, time to get excited.  It looks like T-Mobile has been sending out invitations to a private launch event taking place on April 21, a little bit less than 3 weeks from now, in the Big Apple.

Unfortunately, T-Mobile has not released any details as to what they will be announcing, but you may recall that their , a phone that was recently made available in the UK.

Rumor has it that the Magic will be made available by T-Mobile, under the name G2, as opposed to Magic.  While it bears differences from the G1, such as lacking a physical keyboard, it does present an alternative to people who want to experience Android, but not with the G1.  The G1 originally sold for $179, but I imagine the next T-Mobile Android phone to sell for even less than that as a method to persuade on-the-fence potential customers to pick up a G2.

Of course, only time will tell what T-Mobile has in store for us, but with the , T-Mobile will want to glamorize their new phone.

South Korea Telecom Company Launches… A Vacuum Cleaner

South Korea Telecom Company Launches... A Vacuum Cleaner

We’ve seen vacuum robots from Korea before, but not from a mobile phone company. Not surprisingly, the CW100 Robot can be controlled from a cellphone (guess from which carrier…). We take it that you can turn it on and off remotely in case you forgot to do it before leaving the house. Additionally, the vacuum also sends live images from what it sees. After all, vacuuming and patrolling are close enough, right? We’re surprised that it won’t transmit voice to chat with the pets as well. It costs $370 and the data plan upgrade costs $3.7. In Korea only.

Apple patent shows iChat AV answering machine

Posted: 09 Apr 2009 02:23 PM PDT

ichatpatOkay, so this is pretty cool. Apple has that shows iChat AV acting like an answering machine, and though this isn’t one hundred percent new, there are a few significant changes from the last time around.

You see, in October 2007, Apple filed a patent very similar to this that showed ways iChat could send audio or video automatically for users when they are away. But this takes it to the next level.

While computer-to-computer calls wouldn’t benefit too much from this, iPhone-to-computer and computer-to-iPhone calls will. So, if you’re computer isn’t on and someone calls it, they’ll get a message from you saying as much. This could cut down on your iPhone’s battery use, that’s for sure. If the rumors that iPhone 3.0 has video recording, then you’d be able to record messages while on the go. How cool is that?

Microsoft loses patent case and is ordered to pay $388 million

Posted: 09 Apr 2009 02:22 PM PDT

Microsoft loses patent case and is ordered to pay $388 millionMicrosoft has lost a patent violation suit and had a $388 million judgment levied against them.  The suit was brought by Uniloc, a company that makes products that are meant to prevent software piracy.  They accused part of Microsoft's product activation system for Office and the Windows OS of infringing on their patent.  A Rhode Island jury agreed.  Their decision is a reversal of an earlier judgment in U.S. District Court that found in favor of Microsoft.

Microsoft spokesman told news agency Reuters that the company plans to appeal the verdict. “We believe that we do not infringe, that the patent is invalid, and that this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported,” the spokesman said.

Just last month Microsoft won a of its own against popular GPS software maker TomTom.  The company agreed to pay Microsoft for its use of its FAT file system technology in their GPS software.

Microsoft and other tech companies have join together in support of the Patent Reform Act of 2009, which says damages in patent cases should be awarded only on the basis of the inventor’s specific improvements over their prior work, and not on the whole value of the invention itself.

Uniloc has had no comment on the judgment.

The Nintento DSi Is Selling So Well That We Don’t Expect A Next-Gen DS for Years

Nintento DSi Selling So Well That We Don't Expect A Next-Gen DS for Years

Nintendo’s DSi is selling very well: 600k units during the first week-end (2-days) in the U.S and Europe. Nintendo is so pleased with the demand that they rejected the idea of doing price cuts for the Wii or the DS Lite in the near future. In the current economic context, this is quite interesting.

We think that Nintendo will also push back the plans they had for new hardware platforms as long as they enjoy this formidable success in both home and mobile consoles. In the meantime, the company will continue to cost-reduce its offering and improve its margins - not a bad tactic at all.

Posted: 09 Apr 2009 01:42 PM PDT

5 02 08 tmo3gWow. April 21st is going to be a busy day! First, we have the , too. Interesting. Very interesting, indeed.

I mean, it could be just about anything, couldn’t it? Well, maybe not anything but there are quite a few possibilities. The latest Sidekick just got official at the FCC, so maybe that will launch? Maybe it’ll be the HTC Magic? Is this going to be a Cupcake launch?

See, there are just too many possibilities. And of course, it could be all of these things. Now, wouldn’t that blow your mind? I’d put my money on a G2 announcement, though, but we’d love to hear what you guys think. What does T-Mobile have up their sleeves?

The iPhone Is Sensitive To Moisture… Your Moisture!

The iPhone Is Sensitive To Moisture... Your Moisture!

The iPhone is quite a brick to attach to the arm or to have in the pocket while exercising, but we have spotted users who do like to exercise with their favorite phone/mp3 player. That’s nice, but they should be aware that there are reports of iPhone that have been damaged by sweat. on the subject.

When their iPhones stopped working properly, both said Apple employees told them a moisture sensor on their devices had been tripped. “It happens all the time,” said Pittman, repeating what he said an Apple employee at the Willowbrook, Texas, store told him. “He said they have this issue all the time.”

The iPhone water sensor is more accessible than in most phones - it is right on the edge of the phone, while many have this inside the battery compartment. Obviously, there are pro and cons in making the phone more sensitive to moisture. In Most cases, the use of an external case will prevent the problem. Yes, it’s not “convenient”, but you’ve been warned!

April 21st Bluetooth 3.0 announcement confirmed

Posted: 09 Apr 2009 01:29 PM PDT

bluetooth logo1We earlier today that Bluetooth SIG would be announcing Bluetooth 3.0 on April 21st and now that rumor has been confirmed by the horse’s mouth. Bluetooth SIG is gearing up to officially announce Bluetooth 3.0 later this month, which will be faster by means of 802.11.

Speed is definitely the focus of Bluetooth 3.0. It will make transferring a DVD or music library super fast. Like, just a few seconds fast! As far as specs go, we don’t know much at this point, but we do know it is a Generic Alternate MAC/PHY (AMP), making it so Bluetooth devices can use Wi-Fi speeds. This will also make it possible to use 802.11 radios with the Generic AMP.

And as we reported earlier today, Enhanced Power Control will make dropped connections due to signal blockage less of a problem. This is exciting news, folks! And it’s really going to drop on April 21st. Be sure to check back then for all the details.
