| ZuneHD Leak Flagged as Authentic Posted: 10 Apr 2009 07:09 PM PDT Images of the Zune HD have leaked to have pinged their sources deep in Microsoft to learn that it is indeed a genuine shot. These images are promotional materials to be used by Microsoft’s marketing. The little story would be that a graphic design company pissed by being diteched by Microsoft had leaked the images. Hum… that seems really idiotic for a business to do, but why not. The name gives away that the display will be “HD”, whatever that means. The most advanced displays on smartphones have a resolution of 800×480. Who wants to guess? Permalink: |
| Business Bits: Nvidia CEO gets 51% less compensation and Moto’s ex-CFO’s lawsuit continues Posted: 10 Apr 2009 04:22 PM PDT
Less compensation for Nvidia’s head honcho
Moto's ex-CFO v. MotoSo here's the story so far: Paul Liska was the CFO of until February 2, 2009 when he was fired. Previous to his dismissal, Liska voiced concerns that Motorola's mobile unit's numbers were not exactly right. The Moto mobile unit may be spun off (meaning it will become its own company). Liska feared that the mobile unit could lead to the "possible ruin of the entire company." Liska claims that these voiced concerns are the reason he was fired. |

| AT&T launches Samsung a657, doesn’t have QWERTY Posted: 10 Apr 2009 02:51 PM PDT For those of you who prefer to abuse the heck out of your phones, AT&T has launched the new Samsung a657, featuring a plain old keypad. Nope, for your outdoor texting adventures. The a657 features a robust candybar design, with lots of rubber grips and coating to protect it from more wear-and-tear than suffered by a normal cell phone. Built to military specifications, the a657 features GPS, A2DP Bluetooth, and meets military requirements for shock, vibration, dust, water, humidity, solar radiation, altitude and temperature effects. There’s also a built in flashlight for the search and rescue you’ll have to do when your wife loses her pathetic non-commando cell phone in a dark movie theater. The phone will be able to survive really whatever you dish out. For anyone who has a habit of dropping phones in water, or just dropping and breaking phones in general, it might be time to give up the iPhone and go with something a bit more durable. Currently it’s only available through the AT&T business channels.

| AT&T communicating through Twitter during outages Posted: 10 Apr 2009 02:33 PM PDT
Almost 3,000 people have subscribed to the AT&T Twitter feed and receive status messages that are 140 characters or less. Yesterday, AT&T sent about ten tweets to let California customers know how they were rectifying the loss of service situation. The outage was caused by vandals that cut the company's fiber optic cables. Regarding the vandals, AT&T released the following tweet: “AT&T offering $100,000 reward for info leading to arrest/conviction of those responsible for CA vandalism. Call 408-947-STOP.” As of right now, service has not been completely restored in California, but many people have regained connectivity as the company worked through the night to repair the vandalized cables. | Apple counting down to 1 Billion Apps, Win $10k iTunes card, other prizes Posted: 10 Apr 2009 02:30 PM PDT Apple is counting down to the 1 BILLIONTH download of an application on the iTunes App store. Every application you download enters you into the contest to win a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod Touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. You’re allowed 25 entries per day, or you can fill out an entry form to enter without downloading an App. So there’s no confusion, here’s the official wording:
The iTunes App store for iPhone and iPod Touch was released last year and has quickly surpassed multiple milestones, including over 50,000 applications and now apparently nearly a billion downloads of both free and paid apps. So is that $10,000 iTunes gift card Apple’s version of a stimulus package? Anyone know how that will affect inflation of iTunes’ song prices? Will we see a price jump to $1.29? Oh wait…

| Two potential Palm Pre launch dates, as soon as May 17th? Posted: 10 Apr 2009 02:17 PM PDT In addition to the , there seems to be new details about the launch date of the Palm Pre. First, employees are saying that there are now vacation freezes for the month of May, which is out of the ordinary. There is also information that Palm and Sprint will be launching the Palm Pre on Sunday, May 17th. This is a preliminary launch date, and if the Pre demand is higher than the supply, Sprint will be moving the launch date to June 29th. Basically, if the excitement for the Pre is greater than Palm anticipated, the fans will have shot themselves in the foot and caused a delay in the release of Palm’s savior phone. This is only going to happen if Palm is unable to produce and manufacture more Pre phones than there are people that want it. Here’s to hoping that Palm anticipated correctly. The May 17th launch date would , and would fall well within the promised Q2 release window. A June 29th launch date would be a disaster, as it would be well after Apple’s WWDC on June 8th, and whatever iPhone related news is announced can only hurt Palm’s chances of success. In short, the fervor over the Pre might end up backfiring and hurting the device itself. Hopefully, the people who are excited for the Pre won’t be swayed by iPhone news, and will be buying a Pre anyway. Customers that aren’t already planning to buy an iPhone at the next update probably aren’t the type to follow technology to begin with, so they can still be swayed to the Pre. Here’s to hoping for May 17th.

| Time Warner Cable announces highest tier bandwidth cap prices Posted: 10 Apr 2009 12:08 PM PDT
![]() Remember the good old days when all we needed to worry about from our ISPs was net neutrality? Those were great days when there were no caps on what we could use our Internet connection for, and we were scared it might turn into cable TV-like subscription. Now not only is net neutrality still a bit of an issue, there’s the issue of bandwidth caps, with ISPs trying to limit just how much data we download or upload. Time Warner Cable is the latest ISP to institute the idea of caps, and will be expanding its once Texas-based test to Rochester, NY; Greensboro, NC; Austin, TX; and San Antonio, TX. TWC had previously announced its pricing tiers starting at 10GB at $15 up to 60GB per month. The last two tiers in the program have finally been announced. There’s the 100GB for a measly $75 per month, and double that price for unlimited access. Of course, to some people these data caps won’t be much of an issue; actually for most people they won’t be. In some unspecified markets, users will be able to access a DOCSIS 3 network for $99, with much faster speeds and potentially no caps, unless the price is just added on top of the tier price. That would make for $250 per month for 50 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, which is insane. The network caps are almost specifically meant to deal with the top 1% of Internet users who use most of the bandwidth on the networks. Who are the top 1%? Probably people who stream videos from Hulu and Netflix regularly, spend time gaming, and possibly use BitTorrent on a regular basis. That doesn’t even get into purchasing digital content from iTunes, PlayStation Store, Xbox Live, Amazon, etc, which can all add up very quickly. These caps are currently just in testing in these markets, though, let’s hope they don’t stick.

| Webcam Catches Burglar In The Act Posted: 10 Apr 2009 11:56 AM PDT ![]() Let’s admit it - many of us have slacked off at the office by using Internet bandwidth provided to perform our private surfing rituals instead of for work purposes. Good thing this Boynton Beach woman managed to catch a quartet of thieves in the process of robbing her house as she checked her video surveillance system while at work. According to the authorities, Jeanne Thomas logged on to the $250 Wilife system and saw a person standing in her home, where she promptly dialled 911 and relayed the situation for the police to act swiftly. It took all of several minutes before 18 police officers surrounded the house, successfully arresting all four men inside who were later charged with burglary and attempted grand theft. Wonder what her boss has to say about her surfing habits while at work though. Image courtesy of . Permalink: |

If you are an AT&T customer, you may want to log on the Twitter social networking site next time you lose service to your cell phone or Internet connection. Twitter was used by AT&T to let residents of the Silicon Valley stay updated on their service status when widespread outages were reported on Thursday.
