Windows 7 RC might be out May 5th for public

Posted: 18 Apr 2009 04:20 PM PDT

According to Microsoft’s Partner Program website, we’ll see Windows 7 RC drop on May 5th for the public. There were reports that MSDN subscribers were able to download the new Windows 7 version, but it turns out to have been a slip up on Microsoft’s part by posting a page early.

Here’s the text from the Partner Site:

As the next-generation operating system from Microsoft, Windows 7 opens new development, sales, and services opportunities for your business. With Windows 7, you can offer your customers a robust foundation for high-quality experiences across applications, services, PCs, and devices. We are pleased to announce that Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) is available. Windows 7 RC is the prerelease version of Windows 7. Since this is not the final release, your PC will gather and send information to Microsoft engineers to help them check the fixes and changes made based on testing of Windows 7 Beta. Test-drive Windows 7 RC today to see for yourself—and to show your colleagues and customers—how Windows 7 delivers improved management, security, reliability, and performance. Download Windows 7 RC Partners: If you have a subscription to MSDN or TechNet, you can download Windows 7 RC now. Otherwise, you can download Windows 7 RC starting May 5, 2009.

It appears to be valid information, and this would put the RC release a bit earlier than expected. Windows 7 is Microsoft’s followup to Vista, and is already receiving praise as a stable operating system (more so than Vista anyway). From personal experience, Windows 7 will definitely be worth the upgrade. Experts pin the launch of Windows 7 either late 2009 or early 2010.

The Gadget Show Live: Panasonic launches latest Z1 TV series

Posted: 18 Apr 2009 09:34 AM PDT

We , further details have now been officially published in the press release after the jump. However, as you will know, the Z1 wasn’t cheap at all, the official press release below still hasn’t addressed as to what the price tag on this badboy will be.

Birmingham, England (April 17, 2009)-Panasonic is pleased to announce that it is expanding its line of VIERA Series flat-panel TVs with the introduction of the new Z1 Series.

Technological advancements with NeoPDP
In 2008, Panasonic announced the development of next-generation plasma display panels (PDPs) called NeoPDP technology which used ground-breaking technologies that offered better picture quality, higher efficiency and thinner dimensions than its predecessors. After thoroughly reviewing its existing IC technology and panel structures, Panasonic developed new phosphors and cell design technology for improved discharge and new circuit and drive technology to significantly reduce power loss.

As a result, Panasonic has improved motion image performance, contrast and colour reproduction in its plasma displays to achieve a level of picture quality that is simply unprecedented. To improve motion images, the Z1 Series adopts Panasonic’s 600Hz Sub-field Drive Intelligent Frame Creation Pro, which helps achieve 1080 line motion picture resolution*1. Even fast-moving objects are clear and sharp. Users enjoy a truly stunning viewing experience, especially with ultra-dynamic action and sports scenes such as motor car racing events and car chases.

The Z1 Series also delivers a remarkable dynamic contrast of over 2,000,000:1 thanks to the increased brightness achieved by NeoPDP technology and refinements to Panasonic’s Real Black Drive System (a pre-discharge system). With these enhancements, the new models provide the kind of “infinite black” colour that pulls viewers right into the picture.

The Z1 Series will feature VIERA CAST*2, making it one of the first models in Europe to offer this service. With VIERA CAST, viewers can access certain Internet content by simply clicking a button while sitting in their living room. For example, users can view such familiar content as Eurosport, YouTube and Picasa directly on their VIERA TV. Viewers can access other information too, such as news, weather forecasts and stock market information. DLNA connection is also possible with these three series. Digital data*3 such as motion images and still images saved onto a PC can be played on VIERA through a home network. For example, DivX content on a PC in the den can be viewed on a VIERA in the living room.

Flagship model
The Z1 Series is the flagship model combining superb functionality with a slim, fully flat*4, one-inch design. Also featuring full-HD wireless transmission technology that makes flexible room layout possible, these models are perfect for users seeking the highest grade in both function and design.

The Z1 Series deliver outstanding 1080 lines moving picture resolution and a dynamic contrast of over 2,000,000:1. The THX Certified Display they incorporate has passed stringent tests, ensuring that they are ideal for viewing films. Z models also feature home networking with DLNA, which allows playback of motion images with VIERA CAST, and the VIERA Image Viewer. They can play DivX format motion images as well. The Z1 plasma series will be available as 46" (TX-P46Z1) and 54" (TX-P54Z1) models.

Birmingham, England (April 17, 2009)-Panasonic is pleased to announce the market introduction of the DMR-BS850 and DMR-BS750 Blu-ray Disc™ Recorders and the DMR-XS350 High-Definition Recorder with DVD archiving.

Illustrating Panasonic's dedication to providing innovative products for the consumer electronic market, all three models are compatible with freesat+, allowing consumers to view and capture digital satellite broadcasts in outstanding picture quality.

Control, preserve and share Full HD images
Panasonic is committed in providing innovative technology that allows consumers to follow the trend toward Full HD in TV broadcasts, discs and digital AV equipment. Designed under the Full HD concept, the new trio of digital recorders come equipped with an array of advanced technological functions.

First are the recording functions. Each of the new models is equipped with twin tuners, making it possible to record two TV programmes which are being aired at the same time. Programmes that have been recorded and stored on the hard disk drive can be converted to H.264 format and saved. By compressing data more compactly than standard DR (Direct Record) mode, the H.264 format lets viewers use their hard disk space more efficiently or store more TV programmes on a single Blu-ray Disc™. This incredible feature allows users to store up to 24 hours of HD content on one Blu-ray Disc™ (in high-speed copy mode).

For outstanding playback performance, all three models feature high-image-quality PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus and P4 HD, two highly acclaimed technology systems. These technologies give films purchased in disc form a level of beauty rivaling the original film recording, delivering deep, detailed images from recorded TV programmes. All three models are also compatible with Blu-ray standard's BD-Live function, so users can download special features and images from the Internet for an enhanced viewing experience.

In terms of audio, the new DMR-BS850 and BS-750 support the superior sound of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio Essential on Blu-ray Disc™ media. Users can connect the recorder to a compatible amplifier and enjoy the superior quality 7.1-channel surround sound of Blu-ray Discs™.

To add further appeal, the new recorders can save images from a HD camcorder or other digital camera onto the built-in hard disk drive or a Blu-ray Disc™. The new recorders also support Panasonic's VIERA CAST Internet function so viewers can easily access Internet content such as YouTube™ and Picasa™ Web Albums and view it on a large screen TV.

The Gadget Show Live: Garmin-Asus Nüvifone G60 specs get official

Posted: 18 Apr 2009 08:44 AM PDT

Some of you will know that the Garmin-Asus Nuvifone G60 was approved by the FCC late last year, yesterday the specs of the Nuvifone G60 were finally, officially announced. Its very likely that we’ll see it released and on the high streets in a few weeks time. Full gallery and press release right after the jump.

nuvifoneg60_hr_100

Garmin-Asus, a co-branded alliance between Garmin® Ltd. and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. show the new Garmin-Asus nüvifone M20 and nüvifone G60 at The Gadget Show (Stand H22).

The Garmin-Asus nüvifone product line represents a significant step forward in location based service (LBS) technology and offers a superior and innovative value proposition for those seeking an all-in-one, LBS-centric phone, mobile web-browser and personal navigator. Although every Garmin-Asus nüvifone has LBS at its core, each device has unique characteristics because they're designed for specific audiences. The nüvifone G60 is designed for the active on-the-go user who wants an easy-to-use device and appreciates the peace of mind that comes from a device that answers common questions like "Where am I?", "Where am I going?" and "How do I get home?"

The quad-band GSM nüvifone G60 with 3.5G was designed for high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) networks and supports Wi-Fi for fast data connections.  When used on a HSDPA network, the nüvifone G60 has the ability to download files at a fast transfer speed that makes internet searches and downloading large files a breeze.

The nüvifone G60 has a large 3.55-inch display that features three primary icons – "Call," "Search," and "View Map."  Secondary icons appear on the side of the home screen and can be organized by the user's preference. Customers can easily scroll through the icons by swiping their finger across the large touchscreen display, and a built-in accelerometer allows every screen to be viewed in either portrait or landscape orientation.

The nüvifone G60 was developed with an LBS-centric design philosophy. Location information is added to everyday applications including email, SMS, photo sharing, social networking and more in order to enhance applications and share location information with others.

Navigation is at the heart of the nüvifone G60. The nüvifone G60's sat nav operates like a Garmin nüvi® with preloaded maps of North America or Eastern and Western Europe, and has millions of points of interest (POIs) including hotels, restaurants and street addresses. The POIs can be easily accessed for turn-by-turn voice prompted directions. If a turn is missed along the route, the nüvifone G60 automatically recalculates a route and gets the user back on track. In addition, the nüvifone includes quick access to online points of interest through internet enabled local search. The nüvifone harnesses the power of the worldwide web and information about local merchants and attractions is continually updated.

Users can also supplement the POI data with LBS-centric applications from Connected Services, a suite of online applications and dynamic relevant data from Garmin-Asus that adds location intelligence to navigation, phone and browser functions. The expandable list of applications and content includes real-time traffic information, White Pages, weather, flight status, local events, and movie times.

The nüvifone product line also includes Ciao!™, a ground-breaking LBS application that helps users stay up to date on their friends' whereabouts and status by linking numerous location-centric social networks.  Through Ciao!, nüvifone users will see their friends' location on a map and then be able to navigate to that location with ease. Nüvifone users can also choose to have the nüvifone automatically update their social network location information.

The nüvifone G60 features an advanced mobile HTML web browser. Users can surf the web on their phone via Wi-Fi or 3G networks, and the information is presented similar to a PC browser. The nüvifone G60 supports POP3 and IMAP4 email such as Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail. The touchscreen soft keyboard is customizable to QWERTY or A to Z, making it easy to send and receive messages. The nüvifone G60 also includes predictive text to help prevent typing errors.

The LBS-centric nature of the nüvifone G60 shines through when using the three megapixel camera with auto-focus. The camera automatically geotags images with an exact latitude and longitude reference of where the image was taken. The user may then save the image so they can navigate back to the location, or email the geo-tagged image to others. The nüvifone also provides direct access to millions of geo-located landmark and sightseeing photographs available through Google's Panoramio picture sharing site.  The Panoramio photos are searchable and are sorted by the distance from the current location.

Although cell phones have long been considered an important device for safety, the nüvifone G60 takes it one step further by allowing individuals to place calls and identify their exact GPS location while making a phone call. With one touch of the screen during a phone call, the "Where am I?" features tells users their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, nearest address, intersection, hospital, police station and gas station. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or crowded parking lot, the nüvifone G60 automatically marks the position in which it was last removed from the windshield mount.

Garmin-Asus expects to announce the nüvifone G60's pricing and availability in the first half of 2009. Journalists should contact Garmin-Asus media representatives to arrange product demonstrations or interviews. Additional information about the nüvifone product line is available at www.GarminAsus.com.

Oddball Tech: The $500 mouse, Pirate Bay hits a museum, and Ashton Kutcher’s a Gadgetell fan

Posted: 17 Apr 2009 06:13 PM PDT

The SpacePilot PRO

The $500 mouse?

Nope, it's not one of those genetically altered super-mice that they are engineering in the Alkali Flats.  This is a mouse that is really pushing the definition of what a mouse is.  The device looks like something that belongs in the dashboard of a vehicle and has a LCD color screen so you can read your email on it.

Its name is "The SpacePilot PRO."  The $500 mouse is really specialized and is meant for people who use programs like Maya and other 3D applications.  According to Tom's Hardware, "The mouse can actually move in all three dimensions (X,Y,Z) simultaneously, using 3Dconnexion’s 'six-degrees-of-freedom' technology."  If you're not going to use it for that specific purpose, maybe you're better off using that $500 to get a $50 mouse and a $450 monitor (or a netbook).

A piece of the Pirate Bay is in a museum

And you thought that you had to discover something important or star on a television show to get something in a museum.  Nope.  If you run a torrent tracking service, perhaps your server could end up in a museum one day.  Sweeden's National Museum of Science and Technology has purchased a Pirate Bay server for a little under $250.  (So if you’re keeping track at home, 1 Pirate Bay server = 1/2 Space Pilot Pro).  The plan is to put the device in the "Inspiration Imitation" exhibit which is about intellectual property and to stir conversations on ownership.  If they really want to get people talking, they should host their own torrents from that server.

Ashton Kutcher likes Gadgetell

We always liked that Ashton Kutcher guy.  Earlier this week, he tweeted a story from Gadgetell.  If you aren't aware, Ashton Kutcher was in a race with CNN to get one million followers on Twitter.  ?  It lets you watch your TV through the Internet.
