Panasonic Shows P2 HPX170 Pro 3D Stereo Camera at NAB

Panasonic Shows P2 HPX170 Pro 3D Stereo Camera at NAB

Hollywood is drooling over the recent jump in margins that Stereo 3D can induce (apparently, people are willing to pay a bit more for it), and it’s not surprising to see camera vendors start proposing integrated solutions as opposed to taping with two cameras side by side. This should make the whole process easier and most likely less expensive. The P2 HPX170 seems like an interesting solution as it is small with a decent optic and is probably less expensive than homemade solutions studios might have used in the past.

LG Viewty Smart gets official

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 04:25 PM PDT

Well, it’s official folks! their Viewty Smart today and it’s pretty much exactly what we expected. Known for quite some time as the Viewty II, this phone features a touchscreen and several other smartphone features.

The touchscreen is capacitive with a 480 x 800 resolution and features a 3D interface. Other features included an 8-megapixel camera that is capable of video at up to 480p and an ISO of 1,600. The LED flash, panorama stitching and continuous shooting features make this one really special and really add to the notion that this camera could be great even outside of a phone.

With 3G support, a microSDHC card slot that can hold 32GB and on board storage of 1.5GB, you have plenty of room for all your media. You can expect the LG Viewty Smart to make its first appearance next month in Europe and then expand to other countries thereafter.

Samsung Instinct S30 Unboxing

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 04:04 PM PDT

Officially announced at CTIA in March, the Samsung Instinct S30 was released for the public yesterday. We were sent a phone to test out, and we thought you’d like to see the unboxing and first impressions of it. You know you love seeing shiny new gadgets unwrapped.

img 0912 480x360

The Instinct was Sprint’s most popular device last year, so it’s natural that they’d bring on a follow-up. The S30 makes a few big changes and a few small ones. The biggest-small change is the screen size, changing from 3.1″ to 3.2″ of resistive touchscreen goodness. The form factor is different, incorporating rounded edges and a slimmer profile. The color addition is nice. Black is the new beige after all. The microSD card slot supports up to 16GB of music now instead of the 8GB that the previous generation Instinct did.

Other small changes are open API’s for developers to make better applications for the Instinct that can take advantage of GPS and whatnot (it’s a little late in the game for that, but whatever). The phone also includes all of the java based applications that every user wants: Opera Mini and the Sprint Instant Messenger program and some other games and applications. Other than that, there’s nothing different about this phone at all. The menus are all the same, and the screen is just as responsive as before. I’ll get a full review up soon, though I have a feeling it’ll be just like using my current Instinct (which is pleasant enough mind you).

Here’s the unboxing video for you to enjoy!

Hackers hit by the recession turn to the mob

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 02:04 PM PDT

hackerA study by Verizon Business revealed that organized crime was behind more than 90% of all data breaches.  The company investigated 90 data breaches that exposed over 280 million records.

Matthijs van der Wel, manager principal forensics EMEA, at Verizon Business Security Solutions, outlined the typical scenario for data losses.  “The end user makes a mistake. The attacker takes advantage of some mistake committed by the victim company, hacks into the network, perhaps using an SQL injection attack, and installs malware on a system to collect data.”

The study also revealed that even hackers are feeling the sting of economic woes.  The going rate for credit card numbers on the black market has dropped sharply from around $16 per record in 2007 to less than 50 cents today, in part due to market saturation and the over all credit crisis.

In response, hackers are turning to PIN (personal identification number) theft, and PIN fraud is exploding.  PINs are used to secure both credit and bank accounts.  93% of compromised data comes from financial firms.

Hackers are not going away anytime soon.  They will continue to roll with the punches and find new ways to steal and profit from personal data.

AT&T set to double 3G speed to 7.2Mbps this year

Posted: 20 Apr 2009 01:38 PM PDT

att logo 480x277In case you were ever in doubt, the Vice President of technology realization at that the company will be doubling their peak 3G speeds sometime this year. Yes, that means a maximum potential speed of 7.2Mbps.

Currently in a trial phase in just two cities, we can expect the full rollout to occur in areas that already receive AT&T 3G service in the next month or two. This will happen by means of a software upgrade, then further expansion will occur as will an infrastructure upgrade.

Another important thing to note is that AT&T will likely skip the 14.4Mbps upgrade altogether and move straight ahead to the 20Mbps HSPA+ network. And with all this talk of upgrading, we can’t help but notice this syncs up perfectly with the iPhone 3.0 on the horizon. It’s all falling into place.
