T-Mobile announces 1 million G1s sold

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 05:13 PM PDT

T-Mobile G1

A quiet celebration took place in headquarters?  What is there to celebrate today with the economy in mind, you ask?  Not much, but T-Mobile’s G1 reached it’s one millionth sale and it is the most popular 3G phone on their network.

For .  Any way you look at it, the iPhone has always sold strong and will probably remain selling well.  T-Mobile can’t celebrate just yet until they can really fight the iPhone, whether it be with the G1, the G2, or any other future smartphone.

Unfortunately for T-Mobile, they are still fourth most popular cell phone carrier in America, and recent profit sales and user subscriptions have declined over time.  It will still take some work, new phones, and original thinking to put T-Mobile back in the race and make them a real threat to Verizon and AT&T.

The N110 features a 10-inch display, of course, with a 93% keyboard, 1GB of RAM, a 1.6GHz Atom processor, a 160GB hard drive and a 6-cell battery. This is supposed to allow for 9-hours of battery life.

The other model, the N120, sports many of the same features as the N110. However, it has a larger keyboard that is 97% of full size and a 2.1-channel speaker system. You only get 6-hours of battery life out of this one, but it’s still pretty good. Both come with Windows XP Home pre-installed and cost $469 and $459, respectively.

Supposedly, the new TVs are going to have a B9000 naming system. They will also feature LED backlighting and dimming, which makes for improved contrast. This will replace the edge lighting seen on some other models.

They will likely be a part of the Touch of Color line and feature wireless connectivity with the option to access Yahoo Widgets and YouTube on your TV. DLNA support is also included. The 9 Series will only include two models at first, measuring in at 46 and 55 inches each. You can expect them to be released later this year, though no official release date or pricing is known yet.

Men Send 217,000 SMS To Break Record, Get a $26,000 Bill

Two men from Pennsylvania sent 217,000 SMS during March 2009 in an attempt to break the previous record. We’re still waiting to hear from the Guinness book of world record about the certification, but what’s for sure is that one of them has received a bill of $26000 from T-Mobile, even though he had an “unlimited” text plan. T-Mobile is now investigating what happened. Hopefully, T-Mobile’s definition of “unlimited” isn’t the same than some broadband companies…

Stolen laptops cost dearly

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 03:21 PM PDT

laptopIntel's study of notebook security has revealed that lost and stolen laptops cost companies an average of nearly $50,000.  This is because the value of the computer includes the data it held as well as the device itself.

A senior executive's notebook is valued at $28,449 while a director or manager's is worth around $60,000.  Thousands of laptops are left behind in taxis and planes and are stolen from airports and transit hubs each year.

Poison Pill

While the most obvious way to cut down on laptop loss is for owners to simply be more careful, data encryption can prevent confidential info from falling into the wrong hands.
Intel has developed technology that plants a "poison pill" on a laptop which can be triggered by a remote server if the laptop is lost or stolen.  It locks the computer, making it useless.

“I’m right here!” says misplaced notebook

Another interesting anti-theft technology is LoJack.  Used for years in cars, there is also a version for laptops and it works in much the same way.  Once installed and activated, if the laptop is stolen, the owner calls in and notifies LoJack.  As soon as the thief goes online, LoJack can trace their location and recover the laptop.  They can also wipe the hard drive at the owner's request.

Have you ever lost your laptop or had it stolen? Tell us about it!

Google Updates Its Products Search For iPhone and Android, Uses Time-Dilation in Promotional Video

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 03:15 PM PDT

We’ve tried many mobile product searches on our phones, but at the end of the day, once we drove our butts in a store, it’s unlikely that a small price difference will change our minds. Checking the price *before* going there might work better. Anyway, if you are in a pinch and want peace of mind before buying a product, you can still use the updated Google product search. Check the Video to see the how Google markets its product. What I came away with is that Google is using the same - or may be this guy types really fast and their network has no latency.

YouTube gets more social with RealTime

Posted: 23 Apr 2009 02:01 PM PDT

YouTube gets more social with RealTimeYouTube is launching a new feature called "YouTube RealTime" to only 100 invited users.  Here's how it will work.  There will be a new toolbar on the bottom right of the page.  You'll be able to see who's online and who's not, what they're watching, and some info on their recent history on YouTube.  From the sounds of it, it should be similar to the toolbar that shows up when you hit Facebook.

To be included in that 100, you had to be one of the first 100 to comment to YouTube's blog post.  This seems like an interesting experiment by YouTube to get some buzz going.  People already waste hours on YouTube.  By seeing what your friends are doing online and what they're watching, you've got the ability to lose days.

At last count there were over 100 comments.  Did you get in to the beta?  What do you think?
